As PSI's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Dean Smith is responsible for ensuring clinical requirements and perspectives are incorporated into health information technology projects and processes at PSI. He also assists with business development, particularity in the federal and overseas markets, and collaborates with medical leadership partners throughout PSI's lines of business. He keeps PSI leadership abreast of the latest developments in the medical field and aligned with PSI's health IT endeavors.

Dr. Smith joins PSI following a successful career at the U.S. State Department, where he served abroad as regional medical officer in Peru, Iraq, Russia and Thailand. During this latter assignment he served as medical manager for Asia and was responsible for the State Department's medical operations throughout Asia and the Pacific.

Upon return to the U.S., he was appointed Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the State Department's Medical Bureau and managed the day-to-day operations of the Department's global medical enterprise. During his career at the State Department, Dr. Smith also served as physician to the Secretary of State as well as Senior Advisor for Medical Informatics. In this role, he led teams that deployed a global telemedicine platform, developed a database of world-wide medical resources and capabilities, and explored several electronic health record solutions for the State Department.

Following his career at the State Department, Dr. Smith served as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer at GlobalMed, an industry-leading telemedicine company, and a principal at Cascade Clinical Informatics, a medical informatics consulting company. Dr. Smith holds undergraduate degrees in chemistry and German, obtained his MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and completed post graduate medical residency at the University of Washington. Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in Medical Informatics from Oregon Health Sciences University. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine.

When he’s not at work? Dean lives in Arlington, VA with his wife Ilene, along with their very spoiled dog, a wire-haired Vizsla named “Pica.” When not playing tennis, biking, skiing and fly fishing, they spend as much free time as possible with family on their working farm near Bend, Oregon.
